If It Was Real, How the Fuck Could You Do This to Me?

I hope you read this someday.

Actually, fuck that.

I hope you recognize yourself in every single fucking word.

I hope your stomach drops.

I hope your chest gets tight.

I hope for just a second you have to put your phone down because every memory you’ve apparently learned how to live without comes flooding back all at once.

And I hope one question follows you long after you finish reading:

If it was real, how the fuck could you do this to me?

Because that’s what you said, right?

It was real.

The feelings were real.

The connection was real.

The things you told me were real.

The way you cared about me was real.

We were real.

So explain it to me.

Explain how something can be so fucking real until suddenly I’m the only one still bleeding from it.

Explain how you can tell someone they mattered and then somehow live like their absence barely changed your fucking day.

Explain how you can become someone’s safe place and then become the exact fucking reason they need one.

Because that’s what you did.

And what makes it so much worse is that you knew.

You knew exactly what I’d already survived.

You knew about the people who came before you.

You knew what they’d done to me.

You knew how many times I’d been lied to, manipulated, abandoned, disappointed, and made to feel like loving me was some impossible fucking burden.

You knew I had spent years learning how to survive people I once would’ve sworn would never hurt me.

You knew why I overthought.

You knew why I needed reassurance sometimes.

You knew why certain changes in tone scared me.

You knew why silence could send my brain into a fucking war zone.

You knew why trusting someone wasn’t simple for me.

You knew what it cost me to let somebody in.

And I told you.

I fucking warned you.

I showed you the scars before I ever handed you the knife.

And you looked at all of that and basically told me:

I’m different.

You told me I could trust you.

You reassured me.

You made me believe I didn’t have to be afraid with you.

You made me feel ridiculous for expecting the worst because you weren’t going to be like everyone else.

You weren’t going anywhere.

You weren’t going to hurt me like they did.

You weren’t them.

And God, I wanted to believe you.

So I did.

That’s the part that fucking destroys me.

I believed you.

Against every instinct screaming at me to keep one foot out the door, I stayed.

I lowered the walls.

I let myself get attached.

I let myself imagine that maybe this time I wasn’t walking straight into another lesson disguised as love.

I thought maybe I had finally found someone who understood why my heart came with fucking warning labels and still wanted to hold it carefully.

You knew I wasn’t asking for perfection.

I just needed consistency.

Honesty.

Communication.

Reassurance when things felt off.

Someone who didn’t make me constantly question whether tomorrow they would wake up and decide I was too much.

And you made me believe I had finally found that.

Then somehow you became exactly what you promised me I didn’t have to fear.

Read that again.

You became the person I needed to heal from.

After listening to me tell you about all the people I had already needed to heal from.

Do you have any idea what that does to somebody?

Because you didn’t just break my heart.

You made me question my ability to trust myself.

That’s the wound nobody fucking talks about.

It wasn’t only losing you.

It was realizing that once again, I looked at someone and thought, You’re safe.

And once again, I was wrong.

Now I have to untangle you from all the things you promised you weren’t.

Now I have to remind myself that trusting you wasn’t stupidity.

That loving you wasn’t stupidity.

That believing the person standing in front of me when they repeatedly told me I was safe wasn’t fucking stupidity.

Because I didn’t hallucinate you.

I didn’t create those conversations.

I didn’t make promises to myself and pretend they came from you.

I didn’t imagine the way you made me feel.

I didn’t force those words out of your mouth.

You participated too.

You fucking helped build this.

Brick by brick.

Conversation by conversation.

Promise by promise.

You helped me believe there was something here worth protecting.

Then somehow I became the one standing in the fucking wreckage asking what happened while you figured out how to continue living like you didn’t leave pieces of yourself everywhere inside me.

And then you tell me it was real.

Do you understand how fucking cruel that sounds sometimes?

Because if it was fake, at least I could hate you.

If you lied about everything, eventually I could convince myself I fell in love with someone who never actually existed.

But you’re telling me it wasn’t fake.

You’re telling me you cared.

You’re telling me I mattered.

You’re telling me those moments meant something to you too.

So how the fuck did we end up here?

How could you know what abandonment had already done to me and become another goodbye?

How could you know how terrified I was of being made to feel disposable and leave me questioning whether I ever mattered?

How could you hear every story about the people who broke me, hold me while I explained why I was scared, and then eventually become another fucking chapter I have to explain to someone else someday?

That’s what really gets me.

One day, somebody else might ask me why I have such a hard time trusting.

And now?

Your name belongs somewhere in that answer.

Think about that.

You went from being the person who was supposed to prove to me that not everybody leaves scars…

to becoming one of them.

You became another reason I hesitate.

Another reason I’ll analyze someone’s words.

Another reason I’ll wonder whether I’m not going anywhere actually means anything.

Another reason some future version of me will have to fight the urge to run when somebody treats me well because I’ve learned that people can treat you beautifully right before they fucking destroy you.

And you knew.

That’s what I can’t get past.

You fucking knew.

You knew I loved hard.

You knew I got attached.

You knew I wasn’t built for casual feelings disguised as forever.

You knew when I gave somebody my heart, I gave them the whole fucking thing.

And you still let me hand it to you.

I let you see the version of me that doesn’t come out for everyone.

The scared one.

The soft one.

The ridiculously hopeful one.

The one who would’ve shown up at 3 a.m.

The one who remembered every tiny detail.

The one who would’ve sat beside you through the absolute fucking trenches.

The one who would’ve forgiven mistakes.

The one who would’ve fought for us when things weren’t easy.

I didn’t need perfect.

I needed real.

And according to you, that’s exactly what we had.

So again:

How the fuck could you do this to me?

Don’t tell me timing.

Don’t tell me life got complicated.

Don’t feed me some bullshit about people coming into our lives to teach us lessons.

I didn’t fucking need another lesson.

I needed somebody to finally mean what they said.

I already knew people could leave.

I already knew people could hurt me.

I already knew someone could swear they loved me and still make me cry myself to sleep.

I already knew how to pick myself up after someone shattered me.

Trust me.

I’ve had enough fucking practice.

You weren’t supposed to teach me how to survive another heartbreak.

You were supposed to be the person who finally showed me I didn’t always have to.

And maybe that’s why losing you hurts differently.

Because I wasn’t only grieving you.

I was grieving the version of myself I got to be when I believed you were safe.

The girl who started relaxing.

The girl who stopped waiting for the other shoe to drop.

The girl who thought maybe love didn’t always have to feel like survival.

I fucking miss her too.

And I’m angry that I have to find her again.

I’m angry that I have to teach her that opening her heart wasn’t a mistake.

I’m angry that I’m left cleaning up emotional damage caused by somebody who knew exactly how much damage had already been done.

And the fucked-up part?

After all of this…

I still care about you.

Some nights I still miss you.

Some nights I’m furious with you.

Some nights I want answers.

Some nights I want you to hurt just enough to understand what this felt like.

Some nights I want to know whether you ever lie awake thinking about me too.

And some nights?

I just fucking want you back.

There.

That’s the humiliating truth.

My heart hasn’t figured out how to hate you just because you hurt it.

Sometimes it remembers who you were to me before it remembers what you became.

But don’t confuse that with me staying broken forever.

Because eventually I’m going to heal from you too.

Just like I healed from everything I told you about.

That’s the fucking irony, isn’t it?

You heard the stories about everything I’d survived.

You saw how hard I fought to become myself again.

You promised me you weren’t another thing I’d have to survive.

And now you’re becoming another thing I survived.

One day your name won’t hurt like this.

One day I won’t need answers.

One day I won’t wonder if you miss me.

One day somebody might love me without making me terrified that their words have expiration dates.

And maybe by then you’ll finally understand what you lost.

Maybe one night something stupid will remind you of me.

A song.

A joke.

A phrase.

A place.

Maybe you’ll remember the girl who would’ve moved fucking mountains to make sure you never questioned whether you were loved.

Maybe you’ll remember how much patience she gave you.

How many times she tried to understand.

How desperately she wanted to believe you were exactly who you said you were.

And maybe that’s when it’ll finally punch you in the fucking chest.

Because I wasn’t asking you to save me.

I wasn’t asking you to fix every broken piece of me.

I wasn’t asking you to be perfect.

I was asking you not to become another person I had to recover from.

And you did.

You fucking did.

So if you ever read this, don’t feel sorry for me.

Don’t give me another explanation.

Don’t tell me again that it was real as if that somehow makes this easier.

Just sit with the fact that I trusted you with wounds you didn’t create…

and somehow you found a way to leave your fingerprints on them anyway.

Sit with the fact that I loved you knowing love terrified me.

Sit with the fact that I chose vulnerability when every survival instinct inside me told me not to.

Sit with the fact that I believed you when you promised me you were different.

And most importantly, sit with this:

You knew exactly what I’d already survived.

You promised me you were different.

You made me believe I was finally safe.

And then somehow…

you became the person I needed to heal from.

So when you tell me it was real—

when you swear you cared—

when you insist I mattered—

I hope you finally understand why there’s one question I may never stop wanting to scream at you:

If you knew what I’d already survived…

if you really fucking loved me…

if I really mattered to you…

how the fuck could you do that to me?
