Scared to Take the Chance, Terrified to Let it Pass Me By
There’s a strange kind of fear that comes with finally being given something you actually want.
You spend so much time wishing for something real. Something soft. Something safe. Something that doesn’t leave you constantly questioning where you stand.
And then, when it finally starts to show up, you panic.
At least I do.
I wish I could say I’m fearless when it comes to taking chances, but I’m not. I overthink. I hesitate. I look for the catch. I convince myself that if I stay guarded enough, maybe I can protect myself from whatever heartbreak might be waiting on the other side.
The problem is, walls don’t just keep pain out.
They keep good things out too.
That’s the part I’m learning.
Sometimes, being scared doesn’t mean something is wrong. Sometimes it means something matters enough that losing it would hurt.
And that realization is terrifying.
Because taking a chance means admitting I care. It means letting someone see the parts of me that aren’t polished or easy. It means saying, “I want this,” while knowing there are absolutely no guarantees.
That is terrifying for someone who has learned to survive by expecting the worst.
I know there are moments when my fear probably looks like hesitation. Distance. Confusion. Maybe even disinterest.
But inside, there’s usually a completely different battle happening.
Part of me is screaming, “Run before you get hurt.”
Another part of me is quietly saying, “What if this time you stay?”
What if I stop assuming every good thing has an expiration date?
What if I stop punishing new people for wounds they didn’t create?
What if I let someone be patient with me instead of deciding ahead of time that eventually they’ll leave?
What if I actually take the chance?
That’s where I am right now.
Trying.
Not perfectly. Not gracefully. But genuinely.
I’m trying to stop letting fear make every decision for me. I’m trying to trust actions instead of worst-case scenarios. I’m trying to remind myself that being careful and being completely closed off are not the same thing.
And maybe I need a little patience while I figure that out.
Maybe I need someone who understands that sometimes the people who want love the most are also the ones most terrified to receive it.
Because when you’ve been hurt enough, safety can feel suspicious.
Consistency can feel unfamiliar.
Kindness can make you wait for the hidden motive.
And a real chance at something good can feel almost scarier than walking away.
But I don’t want to keep living like that.
I don’t want fear to keep stealing experiences from me before they even have the opportunity to become something.
I don’t want to look back one day and realize I lost something beautiful because I was too busy preparing for it to hurt me.
So maybe this is me choosing differently.
Maybe this is me admitting that I’m scared, but I’m still willing to try.
Maybe courage isn’t walking into something without fear.
Maybe courage is shaking the entire way and walking toward it anyway.
I don’t know exactly where this chance will lead.
I don’t know if it will become something permanent or simply teach me something I needed to learn.
But I do know this:
I’m tired of letting fear write the ending before the story even begins.
So I’m trying to turn the page.
Scared as hell.
But turning it anyway.
